UNC fans showed out this year.

In what has been an exciting year in which the Tar Heels have bounced back in a big way after last season’s woes, UNC topped the college basketball world in average attendance. There were long stretches of the season where the team was away from the Smith Center, but when they were home, the crowd was full.

Average Attendance List

  1.  UNC- 20,593
  2. Syracuse- 20,288
  3. Kentucky- 19,904
  4. Tennessee- 19,494
  5. Arkansas- 19,100
  6. Creighton- 17,269
  7. Indiana- 16,478
  8. Kansas- 16,300
  9. Marquette- 16,205
  10. BYU- 15,555

Adam Lucas of GoHeels posted this quote from the SB Tribune, which covers Notre Dame athletics: “It’s historically Rule No. 1 when playing North Carolina. Keep the Tar Heels from getting stops and getting out in transition, because when they get stops and get out in transition at home, that 21,000-seat Smith Center feels like it holds 50,000. The whole atmosphere just feels like an avalanche for the visiting team.”

Bounce Back Year

Everyone knows the story: North Carolina started last season ranked #1 in the nation and then missed the tournament. This season has been so much different. The team has an abundance of fresh faces but returned RJ Davis and Armando Bacot, who have anchored the Tar Heels. With just one game remaining in the regular season, UNC is 24-6, ranked #7 in the nation, and just clinched a share of the ACC regular season title.

Kudos to the fans for creating an amazing environment!
