Another UNC player to the portal.

North Carolina converted D.J. Jones from a running back to a defensive back last offseason. Now, he will enter the portal. He joins a large group that has decided to leave Chapel Hill.

As a Running Back

Jones played at UNC for four seasons. The first three as a running back, he was splitting carries. He was in the same room as guys like Javonte Williams, Michael Carter, and last year, Omarion Hampton.

2020: 11 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown.

2021: 60 carries for 235 yards. 12 catches for 55 yards.

2022: 26 carries for 124 yards and a touchdown. 12 catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Switch to DB

Jones switched to defensive back before the season. Not only was this needed as the room was thin, but it was a selfless act by Jones. He didn’t have to switch, but it was best for him and the team. On the year, he flashed his speed in his new role. He finished the year with 15 tackles, 12 of which were solo.

As a Recruit

Jones was a 3-star running back out of Fayetteville, North Carolina. At 5’11, 190 pounds in high school, 247Sports listed him as the 856th best player in the 2020 class.

Wherever he decides to go and whatever position he decides to play, Jones will have the experience to be successful.

Best of luck in your future, D.J.!
