UNC gets its first portal addition!
North Carolina landed its first commitment from the portal. Max Johnson, a quarterback from Texas A&M, joins the Tar Heels next season. This is the first big domino to fall for UNC.
What He Brings
Johnson has played at both LSU and Texas A&M. He has experience in the SEC. This past season, he completed 62.1% of his passes for 1,452 yards. Johnson threw nine touchdowns and five interceptions. His first big game with A&M was September 30th against Arkansas. Outside of Johnson’s first season with LSU, he has not been much of a runner.
What it Means for UNC
Is this the only quarterback the Tar Heels will take in the portal? With Drake Maye likely NFL bound and backup Jefferson Boaz transferring, the room could use someone else. Conner Harrell is also still with UNC and looked good in his appearance against Campbell. Will he stick around? With the portal being the wild west for now, anything could happen.
As a Prospect
Johnson is listed at 6’6, 230 pounds. He was a 4-star recruit, ranked 253rd nationally. Johnson committed and played for LSU for two seasons before heading to Texas A&M for the last two years. Now with UNC, he looks to be the guy.
It will be interesting to see how the quarterback position plays out over the offseason.
