UNC has its guy.
North Carolina has announced the hiring of Geoff Collins as its next defensive coordinator. His last stop was as the head coach of Georgia Tech from 2019 to 2022. He will be tasked with fixing a defense that has been near the bottom of all categories statistically in the country.
Previous Coordinator Stops
Before head coaching at Temple and then Georgia Tech, Collins was the defensive coordinator at Florida and Mississippi State.
2015-2016 Florida:
2015: #15 defense in the nation. The Gators allowed just 329.8 yards per game, and 29 touchdowns in 12 games.
2016: #8 defense in the nation. Allowed 310.2 yards per game, and only 30 touchdowns in 14 games.
2013-2014 Mississippi State:
2013: #52 defense in the nation. Gave up 387.3 yards per game, and 37 touchdowns in 13 games.
2014: #18 defense in the nation. Allowed 349.3 yards per game, and 36 touchdowns in 13 games.
What to Expect?
Collins was supposed to be a home-run hire for the Yellow Jackets in 2019. However, winning there isn’t easy to do, and things were rough from the jump. He had three three-win seasons and a five-win season. Although that didn’t work out, he has proven that his defenses can be some of the best in the country. North Carolina’s defense can’t get much worse nationally, and if Collins can help improve it in year one, there is reason for excitement in Chapel Hill.
