What an honor for Hampton!
After a masterful performance against App State, Omarion Hampton earned the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week. He lit the Mountaineers up, shedding tackles, running by defenders, and powering his way into the end zone. This is his first time winning the award, but considering he is only a sophomore, it may not be his last.
What Were His Stats?
We covered how this was one of the best single games in UNC history, and went over his performance as a whole. However, this is a game that does not seem to be getting enough buzz. Hampton ran the ball 26 times for 234 yards and three touchdowns. He had one catch for 10 yards as well. Without Hampton going off, UNC likely loses that game.
What’s Next?
Hampton looks to have already made a huge jump from last season. Being a starter during both your freshman and sophomore years is impressive on its own. It shows that the coaches have faith in his ability to help lead the team every week. Should he continue to get the bulk of the carries every week, his ability to run opponents over, bounce off of contact, and use his speed to get up field could make him one of the best running backs in the country. He certainly has the tools to be just that.
Hampton is going to be exciting to watch for the next few years!
