Bad look for UNC…
North Carolina just got dominated for four quarters against a rival. The game was never close. There was an obvious difference in care and intensity from start to finish. When you get beat like that, the other team gets to talk, and they did. NC State head coach Dave Doeren and linebacker Payton Wilson had words for UNC after the victory.
Fighting Words
While being interviewed after their win, Doeren said, “There’s nothing better than beating them baby blue boys.” Since he was hired in Raleigh, he has made a point to show how much he hates UNC. Whether they win or lose to the Tar Heels, he’ll have something to say. That is how rivalries are supposed to work. You don’t like each other, and make it known.
However, what he said next in the locker room may have been a bit over the top. In a moment captured by the ACC Network, Doeren said, “It’s been 1,460 days since those pieces of **** beat us.” Saying that about college athletes as a 51-year-old man is pretty off-putting, but also on brand. There’s a difference between showing your disdain and being that vile.
Just last year, Wolfpack fans were upset over Drake Maye saying, “People who go to State just can’t get into UNC.”
Former Commit Makes a Point
NC State’s best player was once committed to UNC. Linebacker Payton Wilson has been one of the better defensive players in the country this season. Along with his coach and everyone with ties to NC State, he really doesn’t like the Tar Heels. Wilson had this to say after the game: “If you want to have culture, come to Raleigh. Them boys in blue don’t know about it.” Although it is hard to hear, is it true?
After last night, who knows if even these comments could make UNC play with fire against the Wolfpack next season.
