The former UNC forward  joins a list of Virginia Tech players.

Former North Carolina forward Tyler Nickel has entered the transfer portal again. A member of the 2022 class with Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington, he played one season in Chapel Hill.

Time at VT

Nickel is one of many players from Virginia Tech to enter the portal. He was a 4-star prospect when he committed to UNC and was an elite shooter. Although he did not get to show that in Chapel Hill, he did with the Hokies. In 23.3 minutes per game, Nickel averaged 8.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists, all while shooting just under 40% from three. He is an underrated athlete who can quickly impact a game.

The Hokies did not make the NCAA tournament this season. Although they had a solid team, it only got them an eighth-place finish in the ACC. Virginia Tech accepted an invite to the NIT but were knocked out in the second round by Ohio State. Since then, a number of players have gone portaling.

Hokie Purge

So far, five Virginia Tech players have hit the portal.

  • Lynn Kidd, a center, is headed to Miami.
  • Sean Pedulla, a point guard, is uncommitted.
  • Rodney Rice, a shooting guard, is now with Maryland.
  • John Camden, a small forward, is uncommitted.
  • Tyler Nickel, a wing, is uncommitted.

Something strange is happening in Blacksburg.
