North Carolina has flipped 4-star cornerback Zion Ferguson from LSU!

This weekend was the biggest recruiting event for North Carolina this Summer. There were many targets UNC hopes to get in attendance, with a few close to a decision. Quarterback commit, Michael Merdinger told 247Sports, InsideCarolina that he chose this weekend to be his official visit so that he could help recruit.

Huge Commitment

After being committed to LSU since last September, Ferguson flipped to UNC. The 4-star prospect is ranked number 305 nationally. Stealing a commit from a powerhouse like LSU is not only important for the recruit you get, but it also puts eyes on North Carolina nationally. Ferguson is from Gainesville, Georgia, and plays in the 6A class. His school, Gainesville High, was a perfect 14-0 before falling in the state championship game. Playing in 6A is tough, and you face plenty of competition, especially in Georgia.

Current Class

As it stands, North Carolina’s 2024 class is ranked 15th nationally and second in the ACC. With two 4-stars and 18 3-stars, the ship is filling up. After mid-July, expect North Carolina to have reeled in a couple more recruits and be selective with the commitments they allow. Ferguson is the top-ranked guy in the class and a nice piece for the cornerback room.

Outlook

Mack Brown and the Tar Heels will need a big year to retain recruiting momentum. Additionally, this class will likely finish outside of the top 20. If they can secure a 10-win season, it is likely they will have higher-ranked classes, similar to 2021.
