The newest Bracketology was published today.

Every season, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi does his best to project the March Madness field throughout the season. This year is no different. He has already come out with a few, but this time, he has North Carolina at their best seed of the season. Bracketology, although not always perfect, is usually accurate.

Where is UNC?

In the first Bracketology of the new year, Lunardi moved UNC up to a 3-seed. The Tar Heels have already been through a gauntlet in non-conference play and beat their only ACC opponent. That must have given Lunardi reason to believe that North Carolina has what it takes to be one of the highest seeds in the tournament. UNC will now be tested in conference for the rest of the season, with three straight away games on the horizon. In this edition, Lunardi has the Heels in a bracket with 1-seed Purdue and 2-seed Marquette.

UNC’s Opponents

There are also multiple teams relevant to UNC in his projection. 10 teams the Tar Heels have played or will play are in his current field.

East Region

UConn: 1-seed

Duke: 4-seed

Oklahoma: 5-seed

Virginia: 11-seed

Tenessee: 2-seed

South Region

Miami: 9-seed

Villanova: 6-seed

Kentucky: 3-seed

Clemson: 2-seed

West Region

Florida Atlantic: 4-seed (Played in a scrimmage before the season.)

A lot will change from here to March, but Lunardi is high on the Heels.
