The Diamondbacks ace is headed to Seattle!

Zac Gallen pitched at North Carolina from 2014 to 2016. From New Jersey, he is from an area that UNC usually recruits well. Seeing a Tar Heel earn this honor is always great!

UNC Years

In college, Gallen pitched in 44 games and had an ERA of 3.36. During his sophomore season, he was North Carolina’s inning leader. In home games this season, Gallen allowed just two runs in 42 innings! His second year was rewarded with second-team All-ACC honors. In his final season, he pitched in 13 games, with a 2.68 ERA. In 90.2 innings, he struck out 95 batters and only allowed 68 hits.

MLB Journey

Gallen was selected in the third round of the 2016 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. After a promising start in the minor leagues, he was promoted. A year later, Gallen was traded to the Miami Marlins. After dominating the minor leagues, he was promoted in 2019. In his debut, Gallen gave up just one run in five innings. That same year, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he plays now. He has been an absolute force for them. In 2022, he went 44 innings without allowing a run. Gallen finished last season 5th in Cy Young voting. In 2023, he boasts a 10-3 record with a 3.15 ERA. As the Diamondbacks ace, they are able to lean on him in starts. As time progresses, Gallen will only get better.

At only 27 years old, Gallen is entering his prime.
