These were five of the Tar Heels best performances of the year!
As 2023 comes to an end, we take a look back at the basketball team’s five best games of the year. Although the 2022-2023 season was frustrating and ended in disappointment, the beginning of the 2023-2024 year has been promising. There is a lot to look forward to in the new year!
Five Best Games
5. Clemson @ UNC|2-11-23|– Clemson was looking for their second-ever win in Chapel Hill and looked like a tournament team. Instead, North Carolina came out hot, and Leaky Black shut down one of the Tigers best scorers, Hunter Tyson, who only scored three points. Caleb Love led the game with 23 points, while Armando Bacot scored 19 and RJ Davis put up 17. The Tar Heels won by 20.
4. Arkansas vs. UNC|11-24-23|– In the Battle 4 Atlantis, the two teams battled for much of the game. It was back and forth before the Tar Heels began to pull away with nine minutes left. RJ Davis was on fire, scoring 30 points in this one. At the time, the Razorbacks were ranked #20. The 15-point win was big for UNC.
3. Virginia @ UNC|2-25-23|– The #6 Virginia Cavaliers came to Chapel Hill at 21-5. North Carolina scored the first points of the game and never gave up the lead. It was a dominant performance where the preseason #1 Tar Heels showed what could’ve been. Pete Nance scored 22 points in the win. UNC won by 8.
2. UNC vs. Oklahoma|12-20-23|– After losing back-to-back games, the Tar Heels had something to prove against the undefeated #7 Sooners. UNC went on run after run, pushing its lead and not looking back. Although Oklahoma gave North Carolina a scare late with a run of its own, the Tar Heels responded, handing the Sooners their first loss. As of now, the 12-point win is still their only loss.
1. Tennessee @ UNC|11-29-23|– #10 Tennessee and Rick Barnes were set to take on North Carolina in the ACC-SEC challenge. In what was supposed to be a great game, the Tar Heels rocked the Volunteers early, scoring 61 first-half points against the number-one defense in the country. Although Tennessee fought back in the second, it wasn’t enough, and UNC got an eight-point win. RJ Davis scored 27, Armando Bacot put up 22, Harrison Ingram had 20, and Cormac Ryan finished with 15. UNC won by 8.
