Almost an annual event for UNC at this point.

How awesome is UNC field hockey? That program has been dominant for a while, and their amazing run now spans two coaches.

New Coach, Same Winning Way

This season, the Tar Heels were in their first year of field hockey superstar Erin Matson’s first year as head coach. Her previous five seasons were spent being the best player in the country, with four national championships in that span. In those five seasons, Matson and her team lost a total of eight games, and seven of those were in an odd 2021 year. If you take that out, that is one loss over four seasons. Now, in her first year as head coach, Matson has won another national title. Dominance is an understatement. This year’s squad, led by Ryleigh Heck (only a sophomore) and goalie Maddie Kahn, went 18-3 on their way to a national title.

Championship Game

That championship game was as stressful as it gets. After a 1-1 finish in regulation, it went to double overtime, where no goals were scored. It took a penalty shootout and clutch performances to defeat a Northwestern squad that had only lost their opening game. Kahn stopped the Wildcats last four attempts, while UNC made two of its last three for the win.

UNC field hockey won its 11th national title. They’ve won five of the last six!
