It took a while, but UNC is 4-0 again.

After 26 years, North Carolina is finally 4-0 again. The program had hit 3-0 so many times, but that fourth win always slipped away. Not this time. UNC answered the bell, and Mack Brown has his team looking better than they have looked since his first stint with the Tar Heels.

How Did We Get Here?

Something is different about this North Carolina team. The games aren’t getting away from them, big plays by the opposition do not seem to fluster them as bad, and there seems to be more unity between everyone. The four wins have not been easy, but UNC is coming out on top.

  • South Carolina– Although UNC was ranked higher, many expected the Gamecocks to win here. It did not happen. North Carolina’s defense showed up and, aside from two drives, negated the South Carolina offense. Meanwhile, the Tar Heels offense scored and kept the game at a distance after the half. UNC won the trench battle, which led to winning the game.
  • App State– This was UNC’s toughest game yet. As usual, the Mountaineers got hyped for an in-state opponent and never let up. This year’s Tar Heel squad is resilient and made plays when they needed to. After neither team could get separation, the game went to overtime. UNC made the plays it needed to and got a stop in double overtime to win it.
  • Minnesota– Another game that people thought could be an upset but wasn’t. The Golden Gophers offensive linemen were huge, but the Tar Heels defense stood strong. They only gave up one touchdown, where as the offense took control of the game and kept a solid lead.
  • Pittsburgh– The Panthers punched UNC in the mouth, but it wasn’t enough. After going down 14-7, North Carolina responded with huge play after huge play. Only one touchdown was given up after halftime, and it was a kickoff return. North Carolina’s defense kept Pittsburgh at bay while the offense controlled the clock and scoreboard.

What’s Next?

The Tar Heels finally get some rest with a bye week in week 5. The team can heal up and get ready. Luckily, UNC plays three straight home games after the break. This squad is not like the teams of years past; you can just feel it.

UNC’s next game will be against Syracuse on October 7th in Chapel Hill.
