It has been a while since UNC won at Virginia.
On Saturday, North Carolina will head to Charlottesville to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. That place has stumped the Heels for a long time, with the last win at John Paul Jones Arena coming over a decade ago. It has been a house of horrors for UNC since then.
Last Win at JPJ
The last time the Tar Heels won at Virginia was in 2012. That year’s squad included names like Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall, Tyler Zeller, John Henson, Reggie Bullock, James Michael McAdoo, P.J. Hairston, and Dexter Strickland. UNC would win that game 54-51, and then the 12-year losing streak would begin.
It is unfathomable with some of the teams that North Carolina has had since then that they could not win at Virginia once. Since 2012, UNC has been to three national championship games. It is truly a clash of styles, with the Tar Heels always having been a team that pushed the pace and the Cavaliers being one of the slowest teams nationally for years.
January 6th, 2013: 61-52, Virginia wins.
January 20th, 2014: 76-61, Virginia wins.
February 27th, 2016: 79-74, Virginia wins.
February 27th, 2017: 53-43, Virginia wins.
January 6th, 2018: 61-49, Virginia wins.
December 8th, 2019: 56-47, Virginia wins.
February 13th, 2021: 60-48, Virginia wins.
January 10th, 2023: 65-58, Virginia wins.
In the eight losses since North Carolina’s last win at UVA, only four have been by single-digits. Just one of those games has been decided by five points or less.
Will this time be different?
