Should be a fun crowd against Tennessee!
UNC is planning to do a crowd theme for the ACC/SEC challenge against Tennessee. It has been nearly a decade since the last one. Although these are probably expensive due to putting shirts in each seat, they can bolster an environment. One of the best crowds the Smith Center has had was the white-out against Kentucky in 2014.
The Theme
It is hard to find much on it, but North Carolina has advertised that the game against Tennessee would be another white-out. Knowing this was being put on and seeing more marketing for it would be good for the fans so that they can prepare. This is one of the biggest games of the season, and publicity about an event like this should be high.
Edit: The social media page for UNC basketball posted a video on it.
Last Two Themes
North Carolina’s white-out against Kentucky in 2013 was one of the best environments the Smith Center has ever seen. It was a battle of two young and ranked teams. Marcus Paige, J.P. Tokoto, and James Michael McAdoo led the way for that big December win. However, the highlight of the night was an alley-oop from Paige to Brice Johnson that set the crowd off.
The only other theme was a stripe-out against Pittsburgh in 2015. The unranked Tar Heels took down the #17 Panthers 75-71 in a tough game. Marcus Paige and James Michael McAdoo also led the way in this one.
These are fun for the crowd and can make the environment so much better. Hopefully there will be more theme games in the future that are marketed better!
