The Tar Heels fell in this week’s poll.

After losing and winning a game this week, North Carolina lost its #3 spot in the poll. Although both games were close, the loss at home and the teams behind UNC not losing caused the drop.

New Ranking

North Carolina now sits at #7 in the nation. This week, they will have opportunities against Syracuse, a team that they dominated from start to finish a couple of weeks ago, and Virginia Tech, a dangerous team that can shoot. The latter game will bring former Tar Heel Tyler Nickel back to the Smith Center. Both of these opponents are not projected in the current NCAA tournament field. A loss to either would significantly hinder UNC’s chances at a 1-seed.

Last Week

vs. Clemson: North Carolina took only its second ever loss in the Smith Center to a Clemson team desperate for a big win. It was an uninspiring performance, as the Tigers took it to UNC early. Although the Tar Heels fought back, the hole it dug itself early was too much to overcome.

@ Miami: The Hurricanes were projected to be one of the top teams in the ACC this season. That has not been the case, as they have really struggled in conference. UNC built multiple double-digit leads in this one. Miami never let up, keeping it close until the final buzzer went off.

ACC play is never easy, and opportunity awaits the Tar Heels.
