Both coaches were with programs that historically struggle to win.

It is hard to win in college basketball. At certain programs, it is even harder. Two coaches who have ties to North Carolina were at programs where it is hard to excel. Both Jerry Stackhouse, who was at Vanderbilt, and Jerod Hasse, who had been with Stanford, are no longer leading those programs.

What Gives?

Both Stanford and Vanderbilt are tough to win at. Each has incredibly high academic standards that can make it tough to get some of the top talent in the country. According to USNews.com, Stanford ranks #3 and Vanderbilt #18 in U.S. universities.

Since Stackhouse took over at Vanderbilt in 2019, the program has had two winning seasons, never reaching the NCAA tournament. Their overall record in that period was 70-92. In the 10 years prior to his arrival, the Commodores had six winning seasons, but won just three NCAA tournament games.

Former UNC assistant Jerod Hasse had been with Stanford since 2016. They had three winning seasons and brought in a few major prospects during that time. However, they never reached the tournament and decided it was time for a change.

Prior Job Success

Before accepting the Vanderbilt job, Stackhouse was very successful as a coach in the NBA’s G-League. He led the Raptors squad to a championship and their best record in just his first season.

Haase was the coach at UAB before Stanford, where the Blazers had three winning seasons in his four years. Before that, he was with Kansas and then North Carolina as an assistant coach. Those teams he was part of were incredibly successful.

Although this is the end with these programs, both have the background to be successful in the future!
