UNC could use some help in these spots.
Transfer portal season is in full swing before bowl games even start. North Carolina has lost 17 players so far, and more are likely to follow. After another disappointing end to the season, there are areas that could use new faces. It is not always about performance either, as some position groups are thin.
Defensive Line
UNC had something good going on the d-line for the first four games of the season. After that, something changed. North Carolina has plenty of talent, but something isn’t clicking. Kaimon Rucker was good all season, and hopefully he will be back. If Rucker isn’t making a tackle, he’s probably being held (likely going uncalled). Freshman edge-rusher Beau Atkinson showed promise in multiple games, getting to the quarterback. Another edge, Des Evans, was really good in the run game. However, the interior defensive line got gashed all year. There are multiple games where you can watch them get pushed back as soon as the ball is snapped. Once teams figured that out, they ran the ball over and over.
Safeties
For a few years, UNC has struggled here. They haven’t had a true hard-hitting safety in a while. Ja’Qurious Conley was a playmaker here before his devastating injury and is no longer with the program. Now, the Tar Heels lose their two starters to graduation. In the portal, picking up guys that will take the right angles and be in-position in coverage will be huge.
Wide Receiver
This one is mostly based on the number of players. There is a lot of talent at the position on the roster, but UNC has already lost two receivers to the portal that were expected to contribute. On top of that, Tez Walker is headed to the NFL draft. North Carolina will need a deep threat and some extra players. This is a position that the Tar Heels recruit well, but will the freshmen be given playing time?
Where do you think UNC needs help?
