The Washington Commanders have an interesting quarterback room.

Former Tar Heel Sam Howell is looking to start for the Washington Commanders next season. Although he is battling for the starting spot, former NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett is guiding him.

Position Battle

Howell started one game last season for the Commanders last season. He threw for 169 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 35 yards and a score. This game gave the Commanders front office enough reason to believe in him and see what he can do. Brissett is coming off of his best season yet. With the Browns, he threw for over 2600 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. Brissett has admitted that he wants to start, and if Howell underperforms, he may get the nod.

Brissett on Howell: “He’s smart, can make all the throws. Been a joy to be around. I know that makes me sound old, but he’s been good to be around and learn from each other. Competing against each other has just been a lot of fun.”

Commanders offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said that the help Brissett is giving Howell is not something that Bieniemy can offer. “He’s showing Sam what it takes to be a consistent professional.” said Bieniemy.

What We Know

North Carolina fans know what Howell brings. He is tough, has a cannon for an arm, and makes plays. Howell is considered by many to be the best quarterback the Tar Heels have ever had. He set record after record in Chapel Hill and was always fun to watch. His ability to make the right throw and run with toughness made him tough to stop. Additionally, many thought he was a sure-fire top draft pick before his junior season. After North Carolina did not meet expectations, his stock fell. In the draft, he was eventually selected in the fifth round.

Howell will be thrown into a high pressure role next season and must perform.
