After tying for 43rd at the RBC Canadian Open, 23-year-old former Tar Heel Ryan Gerard carried some momentum into the U.S. Open in Los Angeles and remained hot, making the cut before ultimately tying for 56th. Making the cut at a major, especially the U.S. Open, is no picnic. Gerard defeated former major champions like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, and Phil Mickelson.

Leading Into The US Open

Barely a year out of North Carolina, Gerard is still growing up on the PGA Tour. Using exemptions provided for young players out of college, he has played just eleven events on tour. While many young players experience growing pains, Gerard has shown he belongs on the PGA Tour immediately out of the gate, making seven of his first 11 cuts, including serious runs at the Honda Classic and Puerto Rico Open.

Gerard’s Second Major

While Gerard is inexperienced, this wasn’t his first rodeo at a major. Gerard represented the Tar Heels at the 2022 U.S. Open, qualifying for the major while still enrolled at the University of North Carolina. He was unsuccessful, posting the second-worst two-day score of all players who missed the cut.

This year was different though. Gerard started on fire, posting a combined score of 1-under over the first two days, easily making the 2-over cut. In fact, he was inside the top 20 heading into the weekend. Unfortunately, he showed his experience as he struggled over the weekend, falling back in the field and ultimately tying for 56th.

These moments will help build the golfer he is destined to become, and I am certain if Gerard continues putting up the results he has thus far, his temporary PGA Tour status will become permanent. And it won’t be long before we see him start contending for victories.
