North Carolina will play another big game in NYC!
It was just revealed on the UNC Twitter account that North Carolina will face the defending champs, UCONN, in the Jimmy V Classic. This game will take place in Madison Square Garden in New York City on December 5th. This is one of those high-level games that will tell you a lot about where the team is approaching ACC play.
Defending Champs
In a year when North Carolina was the preseason favorite, it was UCONN that stole the show. While the Tar Heels disappointed, the Huskies had an amazing year and encapsulated that with a dominant tournament run. They beat every March Madness opponent by 13+ points, with many drawing comparisons to UNC in 2009. They return star big man Donovan Clingan and guard Tristen Newton, but also lost three starters.
Heels in MSG
Just last season, North Carolina faced off with Ohio State in Madison Square Garden. The Buckeyes dominated for most of the game before Hubert Davis told his team to press and trap full court. This decision completely changed the tide of the game. The Tar Heels went on a huge run. Pete Nance would hit an elbow jumper at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. In that final overtime period, North Carolina would take a quick lead and never look back. It was one of the more fun games of last season.
This will be a massive early test for the Tar Heels, who look to improve on last season’s woes.
