Just When You Thought This UNC Team Was Different…

UNC did it again…

North Carolina headed into a home game against a bottom of the ACC Virginia team as 23.5-point favorites. They left the game with a loss. How does this happen every time it seems there is something special happening for the football program? Mack Brown warned the players about eating the “poisoned cheese.” The fans are the ones who ate it. It is a cycle that continues to repeat itself. UNC wins a few games, everyone has their hopes up, and then they lose a game that had no business being close. Each of the last five times the Tar Heels have been ranked in the top 10, they turn around and lose their next game.

What Went Wrong?

Everything. Missed passes, dropped balls, strange coaching decisions, terrible special teams, a defense reminiscent of years past, and so much more. In almost every aspect of the game, something went wrong.

Missed Passes: Something was off. There were so many passes that were not close to being completed, and no one was on the same page.

Dropped Balls: How many passes were dropped? UNC actually had quite a few good plays fall apart because of someone dropping a pass that hit them in the hands.

Coaching: The decision to not give Omarion Hampton the ball more is unbelievable. He dominated when he got the chance, rushing for 112 yards on 19 carries. In the second half, he barely touched the ball. On defense, with UVA gashing the Tar Heels with runs, UNC refused to load the box and make the Virginia quarterback throw the ball.

Special Teams: UVA started with great field position so many times due to North Carolina not being able to punt the ball 40 yards. That gave Virginia so many easy drives.

Defense: After looking so promising, the defense fell back into its old ways. They could not stop a bad UVA rushing attack. Virginia ran all the way to victory.

Did it to Yourself

North Carolina football had a real chance to change the narrative of the program. Instead, they lose to an abysmal Virginia team whose only win was over William & Mary. If fan support changes now, they can only blame themselves. When you continue to lose games that you should dominate every single year, you have a short leash.

UNC will head to Atlanta next Saturday to face Georgia Tech, a team that always gives the Tar Heels fits.
