Withers had yet to give clarification on his future until today.

Per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, North Carolina forward Jae’Lyn Withers will return to North Carolina next season. It will be his fifth season of college basketball and his second in Chapel Hill. Withers played a key bench role for last season’s team, and his return ensures more seniority and depth.

Running It Back

As mentioned above, Withers will return for a fifth year. He spent three years at Louisville before his transfer to UNC. A Charlotte native, playing at North Carolina has given him a chance to be closer to home. Withers played valuable minutes throughout the season, and his athleticism and motor led to many second-chance points. Being able to guard multiple positions has been a bonus for the Tar Heels.

Big Games

Withers had a couple of impressive performances throughout the season.

Round of 64 vs. Wagner- 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Northern Iowa- 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Syracuse- 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Louisville- 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Roster Continuation

The return by Withers ensures that there are at least two five-year players on the roster. Both he and RJ Davis have seen it all in college basketball. For both chemistry and leadership, returning players becomes more important. With today’s transfer portal, keeping players from the previous year can have a major impact on next season. The Tar Heels only lost one transfer this offseason.

This is a welcome return for a UNC team that lost multiple seniors!
