UNC has played in this tournament twice before.

North Carolina starts their journey for the Battle 4 Atlantis today. They have appeared in this tournament twice before, in 2014 and 2019. They won neither, but it gives a look at the potential of the team. Let’s look back at how they performed in the past.

2014

The first time the Tar Heels ever played in this tournament didn’t go well. They opened with an eight-point loss to Butler, turning the ball over 19 times. UNC was ranked fifth at the time, but struggled to score in the second half.

In the losers bracket, they played UCLA. This one wasn’t close. UNC rebounded and beat the Bruins by 22. North Carolina forced 23 turnovers, and Marcus Paige scored 21, leading the team to a win.

In the fifth-place game, UNC faced off with Florida. A balanced effort saw the Tar Heels win by nine, finishing the tournament fifth.

2019

The season started out solid. After Atlantis, it fell apart. Garrison Brooks scored 20 points to lead the Tar Heels past Alabama in the opener.

In game two, Michigan shot 50% and beat UNC by nine. It was an early glimpse into the offensive struggles the team would face all year, shooting just 15.4% from three.

The third-place game was a good one for the Tar Heels. Facing Oregon, Armando Bacot had a breakout game as a freshman. He scored 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Ranked sixth, this was the last game before a meltdown season. UNC finished the tournament in third place.

Will 2023 be the year the Tar Heels win it?
