How Can UNC Football Salvage the Season?

UNC has a tough road ahead.

North Carolina got off to one of its best starts in program history. Beginning the season 6-0, UNC had their easiest three-game stretch ahead of them: Virginia, Georgia Tech, and Campbell. Well, they lost the first two and face the third on Saturday. It looked as if a special season was in store, but it all fell apart. Now, North Carolina is hoping other conference members lose and for themselves to win out, hoping to make the ACC championship game.

Making Things Better

Obviously, the first step is to beat Campbell. If that doesn’t happen, there was never any hope anyway. North Carolina should take care of business before starting a tough last three games. Win out, and a lot of the mistakes are forgiven. Those final three games include two rivals and an ACC football staple: Duke, Clemson, and NC State. Winning those will put a lot of hurt to rest. Not all of it, but some.

  • Duke: It was announced today that Blue Devils star quarterback Riley Leonard would miss extended time with a toe injury. That means the Tar Heels likely won’t face him in two weeks. Duke has looked very poor offensively without him this year.
  • Clemson: UNC heads to Death Valley for a rematch of last year’s ACC championship game. The Tigers also struggle on offense, but have a very stout defense. Can North Carolina go into a tough environment and win?
  • NC State: You know the Wolfpack will be excited for this one. It’s always their biggest game of the year. This is another team that hasn’t had much success on offense. However, their defense will be ready to go.

A lot of what happens for the remainder of the year is on the defense. They can’t continue to regress and expect the offense to save them. That’s what has happened in previous years, and it isn’t a recipe for success. The offense needs to remain sharp and make plays where they can. It won’t be easy and will take a bit of luck, but an ACC title shot is still on the line.
