He’s planning to transfer again.

Former North Carolina cornerback and 5-star recruit Tony Grimes has entered the transfer portal. As a standout recruit, Grimes reclassified and joined UNC a year early. After three years, he decided to leave for Texas A&M. There were likely many reasons for leaving the Tar Heels, but cornerbacks coach Dre Bly’s departure may have been the biggest.

Stats By Year

Grimes showed a lot of promise in his first season with North Carolina. From his sophomore season on, the whole defense struggled, and having to stay in coverage for so long is not good for any member of the secondary.

2020: 14 tackles, 3 pass deflections, 1 sack, 1 interception.

2021: 47 tackles and 9 pass deflections.

2022: 36 tackles and 7 pass deflections

2023: Transferred to Texas A&M, dealt with injuries, and never played.

Recruiting Profile

Grimes was heavily recruited all over the country. At 6’0, 195 pounds, he was a 5-star prospect, ranked as the #28 player in the country and the third overall cornerback. He had offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, and so many more.

Transfer Statement

In a message posted to social media, Grimes said, “First of all, I would like to thank God for giving me the opportunity to do the things I love. Thank you to the University and coaches that supported me through my year and I appreciate the opportunities that were (given) to me. Thank you to the new coaching staff for supporting my decision. Sorry for now showing the Aggies what I can do on the field but very blessed for the love and support of the fans. I will be entering my name in the transfer portal. Thank you.

Could a reunion at UNC happen?
