Gregg Berhalter will once again lead the U.S. in international play.

In a somewhat shocking decision, Berhalter was rehired as coach of the United States men’s national team. He led the team from 2018 to 2022, before his contract expired. In the six months since, there has been an investigation into his role in a long-standing issue.

The Return

The decision to rehire him was controversial, as Berhalter has had an inconsistent time with the team. The United States is beginning to become a factor on the world stage, and his decision not to play Gio Reyna during the 2022 World Cup became a major problem. The investigation was about a feud with Reyna’s father, who is a former friend. Furthermore, it was believed that this was the reason the young star didn’t play. Berhalter recently spoke highly of Gio Reyna, and knows the U.S. will need him going forward.

Time with UNC

Berhalter was a defender for North Carolina from 1991 to 1994. He then spent time all over before retiring in 2011.

World Cup

Berhalter has been hired to coach the team through the 2026 World Cup. This tournament will be played in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With soccer growing year over year in the States, this will be a good chance to show the world the improvements being made.

With his so-so past, it will be important for Berhalter to impress in the coming years. This will be a test for the experienced coach, one that he must pass.
