Williams said what?!
Last night, Duke legend and ESPN commentator Jay Williams was calling the Kansas-Oklahoma State game. During the action, his partner, Jon Sciambi, asked him about the transfer portal, and where he would have gone when he was playing, and where he would have transferred to now. His answer has Blue Devil fans upset.
The Answer
Sciambi said, “If the transfer portal was open, where would you have gone?”
Williams had this to say: “You’re setting me up. Back then, I would’ve gone to Georgetown. I would’ve played for John Thompson. If you’re asking me today, this is a tough one because I don’t know if I’ll be allowed to go back home.” Sciambi asked, “Are you about to say North Carolina?” to which Williams responded, “I just like the way they play! It’s a fast-paced style of play, I like it! They allow RJ Davis to go.”
Sciambi was shocked, and the two laughed about it.
Duke Fans Not Happy
Obviously, Duke fans did not like what he said. One called the quote “blasphemous” while others said things such as “he’ll say anything for attention” or “kick him out of the brotherhood.”
Williams Past With UNC
Per multiple online sources, as a kid, Williams wanted to go to North Carolina. UNC’s head coach at the time, Bill Guthridge, did not offer him a scholarship due to already having his position filled. Instead, Williams would go eight miles away and win a national championship for the Blue Devils.
It is shocking that Williams would admit to that on live television!
