Realignment talk continues to cause a stir.

The current state of college athletics is a madhouse. The transfer portal is wide open with few rules, schools are doing whatever they want, and conferences are changing. The ACC is being hit hard after not making big moves and falling behind the Big-10 and SEC. Florida State was the first school to sue the conference, but now another has joined.

New Lawsuit

Yesterday, it was Clemson who sued the ACC. According to Pete Thamel of ESPN, this has to do with their ability to explore options regarding conference membership. In Thamel’s post about the end of the lawsuit, Clemson asks for the rights to their games once they leave the ACC, have the withdrawal penalty voided, and that they will not owe any fiduciary duties to the conference. This is a move that will have major ramifications going forward.

Impact on North Carolina

If the Tar Heels were to try and leave the conference, they would be one of the most sought-after schools in the country. According to multiple sources, both the SEC and Big-10 want UNC, and it will be up to those in power in Chapel Hill on where to go. The ACC did a poor job of preserving itself, while other conferences added members that enhanced their conference.

This is an issue that will be ongoing.
