One ACC member flipped its vote.
After an original no vote, the ACC members held another hearing on whether or not to expand. This was a drawn-out process that did not make sense for a multitude of reasons but continued to be voted on. With the SEC and BIG 10 the two power conferences, the ACC was trying to survive. Now, with last night’s vote, the ACC will add Stanford, Cal, and SMU.
Who Flipped?
For the conference to add three teams, it needed 12 out of 15 schools to vote yes. NC State flipped its vote, allowing three schools to join the conference. Those saying no were the three most powerful members: Clemson, Florida State, and North Carolina. Even last night, the North Carolina Board of Trustees released a statement saying that the majority of them opposed realignment and adding the three schools.
Impact
With this news, it is likely that the three who voted no may try to move on from the ACC soon. The TV deals and revenue are not enough in the ACC for top contending schools, and adding Stanford, Cal, and SMU will not change that. Although each of those three bring something to the table, it is not much. None are great in revenue sports, and this decision still makes no sense. The worst impact will be for student athletes that are flying across the country for a weeknight game.
We already knew it, but NC State continues to be good for nothing.
