Wishing a happy Father’s Day to all of the dads out there!
Leaving a Legacy
One of the most famous father’s we have at North Carolina is Mark Maye. Mark was the quarterback at North Carolina in 1984, 1986, and 1987. After his career, Mark had three sons attend North Carolina: Luke, Drake, and Beau.
- Luke Maye: A legend at North Carolina, Luke started off as a walk-on. During his sophomore season, he hit one of the most iconic shots in UNC history to lead North Carolina past Kentucky on their way to a national championship. That tournament began the legend of Luke Maye. Over his final two seasons, Luke averaged 15.9 points per game, 10.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He was the 2018-2019 ACC Most Improved Player, 2x All-ACC, and, of course, a national champion.
- Drake Maye: Drake had an unbelievable 2022 season. Finishing 10th in Heisman voting in just his first year as a starter, Drake threw for 4,321 yards, rushed for 698, and accumulated 45 total touchdowns. Now, heading into the 2023 season, Drake is a a top Heisman candidate as well as a likely top 10 draft pick. Drake was named ACC Player of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-ACC, along with the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year.
- Beau Maye: Beau is a current walk-on for the basketball team. Those who have seen him say he has a nice shot, similar to Luke’s. Could he take the second year jump that both of his brothers did? Only time will tell.
A Special Shoutout
I want to give thanks to my dad, Jay, for his role in my life. Not only in making me a North Carolina fan but also in leading me down the right path. Growing up, I was always around Carolina sports. I loved everything about it, and we went to games when we could. My dad turned down opportunities to go to games with friends because he knew there were not enough tickets for me to go and would rather watch with me. Without him, my fandom and love for the university would not be where it is now. When I was accepted to North Carolina, we cried. It is the only school that I ever wanted to attend, and it was incredibly special. Watching games with my dad are some of the best memories I have growing up. So to my dad, thank you, and I love you!
